The Shapes of Space: Figures and Themes of Contemporary Molisan Architecture (from notes by Emilio Natarelli)

The collected material is the result of research promoted by IRRSAE Molise, which has focused on the sector of architecture and urban planning in Molise from 1945 to the present day. This investigation, curated by architect Emilio Natarelli, aims to shed light on the works and projects carried out in the region by both native and non-native architects, as well as by Molisan architects working outside the region. All this documentation is available for anyone interested and has been summarized, albeit in a more concise form and in a digital version, on this Molise Web portal. This initiative, which brings together different visual expression methods, yet still dialoguing, is particularly important for the architecture sector, as it conducts a survey on contemporary architectural production in the region. The cataloging of works that would otherwise be untraceable or neglected, lost in the maze of the territory, is a commendable operation for the Institute that promoted it, as it allows for the emergence of that part of Italian architectural and urban culture which, despite focusing on research and dissemination of building peculiarities, remains hidden in the folds of the province, lacking space, external projection, and moments of debate: the understanding of architecture, therefore, also as a specific but significant moment in understanding the city and the territory, understood as physical and tangible structures expressing the history of a community. The Molisan reality, beyond bland and inappropriate provincial exaltations, has been a testimony, albeit with contradictions, of an architectural research that has nevertheless influenced the territory and its image, and for this reason it should be disseminated to better understand the cultural potential of the Mezzogiorno
